Nice Gifts for Naughty Loved Ones

We love them dearly, but there are those people in our lives who have a talent for driving us absolutely nuts. She’s constantly late. He talks too loud. She slurps her coffee—it could be anything.

We know you wouldn’t put people on your “naughty” list for such trivial things, and coal is too harsh a gift for such friends. So allow us to suggest a few holiday gift ideas that may help tip things back toward nice:

The Friend: The Multitasker
You don’t know where you are in time or space when you’re with this friend. He’s answering emails, cooking dinner, vacuuming the floor, and tending to his dog pack all at once—and Lucky You becomes designated Phone Answerer, Stand-In Texter, Navigator, and general Keeper of the Phone.

The Gift: Moto Hint, a tiny and stylish wireless earbud, will let her use his phone while his hands are full, and save you from being drafted into duty as an emergency pack mule. (Using Hint with Moto X, he'll even be able to use his phone using his voice with Touchless Control or using gestures Voice Actions!)

The Friend: The Media Mogul
He loves music, video, and games—which would be fine if he weren’t always blaring it at top volume, even when other people (read: you and the whole entire restaurant) aren’t necessarily enjoying it as much as he is.

The Gift: Time to nip this in the bud. Literally. With stereo earbuds. In fact, you can get deals on great sounding Motorola wired and wireless earbuds and more with our two-day music sale, when all music products are 50% off.

The Friend: The Klutz
Everyday life is an extreme sport for this friend: She trips, bumbles, and fumbles her way through life, leaving a good-natured trail of destruction. She goes through glassware like Kleenex. Her smartphone seems to have a regular meeting with the pavement.

The Gift: A sturdy case cover should help keep that phone looking fresh, even if it takes the occasional fall. If he’s a real disaster-magnet, turn him on to Motorola’s Moto Care Accident Protection.

If his phone is past the point of no return, go for the trifecta: a new Motorola device with a case and Moto Care Accident Protection. It’s the best you can do short of covering him in bubble wrap.

The Friend: The Power User
She lives through her phone and she drives it to the very limit, using it to run every aspect of her life all day long. At the end of the day, she’s sweating bullets as her battery hits the red line.

The Gift: A portable Power Pack will keep her connected. She can even use it to charge two devices at once. If she doesn’t want to carry around a full size Power Pack, try the svelte Power Pack Slim, which will let her carry backup power right on her keychain.

The Friend: The Color Coordinator
His shirt, tie and socks all match. Always. Heaven forbid something clash with the color scheme of the day!

The Gift: Enter Moto G. It’s a powerful, affordable smartphone, and it features an available assortment of swappable accessory backs. So he can match his phone with the rest of the ensemble, whatever he chooses.

Making a green workspace in a historic building

Above: A work in progress: renovations at our offices in the Merchandise Mart in 2013.

As creators of many products, environmental design choices and materials selection are hugely important to us. We are passionate about extending that same commitment to other areas of our business, so we were thrilled when the U.S. Green Building Council (USGBC) granted our new headquarters in Chicago’s historic Merchandise Mart their LEED Platinum Certification.

The highest level of certification, LEED Platinum means that when USGBC reviewed our 607,000-square-foot office space, it was able to award the maximum points for energy efficiency. As the Mart’s largest tenant we cover most of the top four floors and rooftop. Our 2,000 employees there work in a mix of spaces that include open-plan offices, seven cutting-edge engineering labs, and various multi-purpose spaces, like micro-kitchens, game rooms, and a theater.

The challenge was that the Mart was built in 1930, before energy efficiency was a pressing concern. When we designed and built our new workspace, we worked hard to ensure that it incorporated the latest advances in energy, lighting, and materials to provide a great work environment that was also environmentally friendly. We upgraded power management, lighting and HVAC infrastructure to the latest technology. Among Chicago’s 864 LEED certified projects, only 40 have earned Platinum, with our new home being the largest of all Platinum projects.

We’re very proud of our offices in the Mart, and we’re happy that the USGBC has recognized the work and care that went into making them an amazing workspace.

Moto X Film Experience: Bringing “Pure Imagination” to Life with Emmy Rossum

Moto X Film Experience: Bringing “Pure Imagination” to Life with Emmy Rossum

At Motorola, we celebrate the power to #choosechoice. This means the ability to make your own choices and the freedom to express yourself however you choose.

That’s why we created the Moto X Film Experience. We gave 12 filmmakers the chance to create something unique using a Moto X and the lyrics to “Pure Imagination” as recorded by actress Emmy Rossum. The filmmakers could interpret the lyrics however they liked and create whatever sort of video they wanted.

Following the theme, we used our imagination and went a step further. You, too, can create your own version by editing together the 11 videos into cool mashups.

Last Thursday in LA, we recognized the filmmakers’ videos, awarding three of them cash prizes. Emmy was also on hand to speak to her role in the program.
458929076.jpg
Emmy Rossum helped announce the winners during the ceremony.

Nanea Miyata took first place, David Aslan was second, and JD Witherspoon won third. All films were made using the new Moto X, which features some serious camera goodness: a premium 13MP camera and 4K video capture, providing amazing detail and clarity. And it’s fast—you can launch the camera with two quick twists of the wrist. We hope these tools, along with the Moto X Film Experience, inspire more mobile phone users to get creative and make video content of their own.

This is a new program, so we’re excited to roll it out and to imagine the possibilities. Filmmakers and content creators interested in learning more about The Moto X Film Experience can email MotoFilmmakers@gmail.com.

Finding Your Phone With the New Motorola Keylink

Here’s an old situation: you haven’t gone very far but you know you’re missing something. You check your pockets, maybe rifle through your bag. Where did your phone go?

Here’s a new solution: Motorola Keylink.

Keylink is a small device that you attach to your keychain. Using the Motorola Connect app on your phone, you can connect your keys to your phone in case either tends to wander off. * If your phone decides to play hide and seek with you, you can press a button on Keylink to make it ring up to 100 feet away. Or if your keys get a similar idea, you can use the Motorola Connect App to make Keylink ring.

The great thing is Keylink is compatible with Android and iOS devices. Simply download the Motorola Connect app from the Google Play Store or the Apple App Store today to get started.

If you own a Moto X (2nd gen.), Droid Turbo or a phone running Android 5.0, Lollipop, you can use your trusted device settings to enable the added ability to keep your phone unlocked when your keys are nearby. This way you don’t have to enter your password to use it. Just enable trusted devices by going into settings and then security.

The battery lasts upwards of a year and you can replace it with a coin cell battery found in any local drug or convenience store.

You can purchase one for $24.99 at Motorola.com and T-Mobile starting today.

*For Android phone it requires Android version 4.3 or later; for iOS phones it requires iOS version 7.1 or later. The Motorola Connect app (downloadable from the Google Play™ store or the Apple App store) and a compatible Bluetooth Smart device. Feature enabled for devices up to 100 feet apart.

Glen Keane on the Making of “Duet,” Now Available on Moto X and Moto G 4G LTE

Glen Keane on the Making of “Duet,” Now Available on Moto X and Moto G 4G LTE

Starting today, "Duet" is available globally as Google's Advanced Technology and Projects group third Spotlight Story on the new Moto X, Moto X (1st Gen.), and Moto G 4G LTE. "Duet" is an interactive love story that brings the timeless art of hand-drawn animation to a new mobile format. Animator Glen Keane spent 38 years animating some of Disney's most beloved characters for movies like "The Little Mermaid," "Aladdin, "Beauty and the Beast" and "Tangled." Today, Glen Keane shares what it was like to work on "Duet" in his own words. We hope you enjoy.

****
Duet is an interactive animated story. It is a synthesis of the most ground breaking virtual world technology and the most ancient of all art forms—drawing. From the beginning of this project we knew it would be a celebration of life through line. The entire production was a creative adventure. We are a small team of artists and programmers working together to accomplish the charge of ATAP’s Regina Dugan set before us. “I want you to make something beautiful and emotional,” she said. “You push yourself creatively and that will push us technologically.”

Duet is a love story between two characters, Mia and Tosh, whose paths cross throughout their lives. Different than the traditional linear story, Duet employs a multi-layered approach that could best be described as a double helix in which the characters’ story arcs literally spiral around one another. Figuring all of this out was enough to make our collective heads spin! Fortunately we were blessed with an incredible ATAP team of technical engineers led by Rachid El Guerrab. The artistic half of our creative suite was led by our producer Gennie Rim and Production Designer Max Keane. Together, my assistant Sarah Airriess and I drew over 10,000 drawings to create the animation for Duet.

Again and again, we were surprised by the freedom this interactive storytelling provided. Jan Pinkava, who pioneered and directed the first Spotlight Story, “Windy Day”, continually encouraged us to put the camera into the hands of the audience. However this is not an easy or natural thing for a filmmaker to do. The tendency is to want to control the visual composition, but with Duet we learned to coax rather than control. Because of the nature of this virtual world technology there were no individual shots cut together. It is all one continuous living moment. I think of it less as a traditional film and more as a visual poem.

Our music composer, Scot Stafford, may have had the greatest challenge of all. Not only was he tasked with creating an emotional score, but it also needed to respond at any moment to the viewers' choice and seamlessly switch themes from one character to the other. Duet is in every way a partnership between the visual and the musical.

Throughout my 40 year career as an animator I have benefitted each time new technology crossed my path because it invariably forced me to become a better artist. In a similar way, Duet has stretched all of us creatively who worked on it.

We have learned that when it comes to storytelling, everything is possible. There still remains so much more to discover.

We are thrilled to share Duet with you today.

Glen Keane
Director / Animator of Duet

Editor's note: We made a mistake in earlier version of our blogpost when it said "Duet" would be supported on Moto G (2nd gen.). Unfortunately, that was incorrect. It is currently only supported on Moto X (1st and 2nd gen.) and Moto G 4G LTE. We're very sorry for getting that wrong.

Going Ballistic with DROID Turbo

Going Ballistic with DROID Turbo

Does anyone else, before leaving the house, recite the trinity? Keys, wallet, smartphone. Our phones travel everywhere with us—in all types of weather and situations.

These days, our phones must be as visually appealing as they are durable. Which is why we’ve equipped our new DROID Turbo with ballistic nylon, a first for any smartphone.

But Just What Is Ballistic Nylon?

Ballistic nylon is the strong, lightweight, tightly woven material used on the back of DROID Turbo. It’s a tough aesthetic that matches the hardcore features of the device: a 48-hour battery, a top-of-the-line quad-core 2.7 GHz Snapdragon™ 805, a 565 ppi screen, and a 21 MP camera.

The material’s history goes all the way back to World War II. Ballistic nylon was originally developed for use as flak jackets to protect airmen from flying debris in combat and served its purpose well.

But ballistic nylon didn’t disappear after that. Through the years, the materials have been used in everything such as:

  • Extreme weather backpacks
  • Tactical bags for the military troops
  • The US Army’s combat boots
  • Hunting supplies
  • Super durable watch straps (Take it from this guy.)
  • Skin-on kayaks (Warning: This video may be too awesome for kayak enthusiasts or ballistic nylon lovers.)
  • Motorcycle jackets and pants

Why Ballistic?

Ballistic nylon, unlike other nylons, is not only known for use in tough situations, but it is also versatile. The military uses it because the fabric is resistant to tears, holes, and high temperatures, not to mention it provides a level of water resistance. Companies use it for some of those same reasons, but unlike some other highly durable materials, ballistic nylon also offers more flexibility in design and execution. We love it because of the material’s association with all of those things.

When it comes to phones, ballistic nylon offers unique visual and tactile aesthetics. It looks sleek and feels strong in your hands. Which is why bringing the ballistic fabric technology to phones for the first time makes sense.

Because why can’t your phone be built to last with a tough look to match?

Update 2: It's time to unwrap: Android 5.0, Lollipop is here

Get ready for something sweet! AndroidTM 5.0, Lollipop is officially here for some of our Motorola devices!

We’ve started to roll out Lollipop in phases just a week after the public release of the software to the following devices in the US:
  • Moto X (2nd Gen.) Pure Edition
  • Moto G (2nd Gen.) US GSM
  • Moto G (2nd Gen.) Global GSM retail versions sold in the US
The most ambitious release yet, Lollipop brings a number of tasty enhancements, including:
  • A new look and feel. Google brings its all-new Material Design to life with a bold, new visual style. The new user interface is designed to enable better, more natural touch screen interactions and introduces vivid new colors, typography, and edge-to-edge imagery to make using your phone more fluid.
  • Your device, your rules. Catch up with notifications on your lock screen and even dismiss them without unlocking. New "Downtime" and "Interruption" settings also allow you to decide what people and what notifications get through at times that you choose.

  • Share your device. You know that moment when your kid plays with your phone or a friend needs to borrow it? Use "Guest" mode or another account you’ve set up to share your device. You can also pin a view to limit the user to a particular application.
  • Let there be light. Shine a light by using the new flashlight in Quick Settings. Just swipe down with two fingers from the status bar to see it.
  • Battery saver. The Battery settings panel now shows an estimated projection for how much time you have left even while you're charging. You can also enable a new battery saver mode that will save power by reducing performance and most background data operations to extend your battery life.
For more about these new features, find details at our Lollipop support page and on Google’s official Lollipop page. We’re working hard with our carrier partners to bring this update to more of our devices as soon as we can. You can always check out the latest upgrade status for your phone by visiting our software updates page.

Hope you find the update as sweet as we do.

Q&A with David Pascual, Winner of the Moto 360 Design Face-Off

Q&A with David Pascual, Winner of the Moto 360 Design Face-Off

Earlier this year, thousands of you participated in our Moto 360 Design Face-Off, a competition in which users submitted their ideas for watch face designs and then voted on their winner. The talented victor, David Pascual, won a Moto 360 and the chance for his design to be officially included on the watch.

The winning watch face, along with four additional new watch faces, is available to all Moto 360 owners through an update on the Motorola Connect app. Also available with this new update is the ability to create your own custom watch face, selecting everything from the background image to the style of the tick marks and watch hands.

We sat down with David to chat more about the nuances of his design, how he came up with the idea, and what advice he has for other Moto 360 designers.

David Pascual (Photo Credit: Maro Hagopian)

What do you do for a living?
I am the Director of Web Content Development for SiriusXM Satellite Radio. I’ve been at SiriusXM for roughly seven years working on just about everything that touches our site. Our service has an incredibly wide variety of content and it makes for a consistently challenging and fun job.

I’m also a student at Georgetown University’s McDonough School of Business working on obtaining an MBA. I’m focusing on entrepreneurship and marketing, two areas I’ve long been interested in. This contest actually validated one of the reasons I elected to go to Georgetown—the close supportive nature of the students. During the voting period, I posted my design to a class Facebook page and received overwhelming support. I’ve been stopped many times by students asking if I’m “the watch guy” and to let me know they liked and voted for my design.

What inspired the design you submitted to the contest?

I started following Moto 360 ever since the original announcement in March. I think that, like so many people, I loved that the form was being focused on as much as function. For many guys, a watch is essentially the primary—perhaps only—piece of “jewelry” that they wear. With that in mind, I wanted to create a face that followed classic design cues and would look good on an analog watch. Then I wanted to enhance it with the functionality that digital enables. For me, the biggest opportunity was the integration of a glance-able calendar. This really pushed the final design that has essential markings along with a prominent calendar ring.

I was pretty excited to create a design that I thought fulfilled that simple yet useful objective. Still, I didn’t imagine it would go on to be in the top 10, let alone win. There were a ton of great designs, so it was particularly rewarding to see so many people seem to share the vision I had of a watch face.

Were their any particular experiences that either led to you design or that had an impact on you as a designer as a whole?

At work, we spend a lot of time thinking about who or why someone might use or consume a piece of content, and this really drives design and development decisions. This principle greatly applied here, and I spent a lot of time considering what makes for a successful watch. One of my conclusions was it needed to retain the ability to be usable at a glance above all else. Everything on the face is designed to be simple enough to read within a few seconds.

What nuances are there to your watch face that might not be immediately apparent?
Probably the calendar ring. It is actually two rings sandwiched together. There’s an inside and outside ring for AM and PM event indicators. If the inside ring has a filled region from 4-5, this means you have a 4am-5am appointment. Conversely, if there were an outside ring shaded from 4-5, it would mean you have a 4pm-5pm appointment.

You're a Moto 360 user and also a designer of a watch face interface. What do you think are important considerations when creating watch faces that people can choose from?

I think it’s really important to consider what the objective is before starting the actual design. Why is it people would want to use your face? I’ve always found it’s easier to create a successful design—whether it be a web page, app, design face, etc.—if you can clearly state what the definition of success is.

Do you feel there was anything different about creating a round design instead of a rectangular one?
Actually designing a round face felt natural since I’ve only ever owned watches with round faces. It was a nice departure from rectangles, which is the shape of virtually everything else I work on.

David with the Moto 360 team at Google I/O

Did you learn anything from working with Motorola to bring the watch face to life?

The Motorola team did all the real work to take my design concept to an executable face [Editor’s note: We really just helped!]. I included a few things that weren’t yet possible in Android Wear, so they helped iron those issues out. They also helped add some finishing so the display would be optimized for the number of pixels on the Moto 360. It was awesome seeing their expertise help translate a concept into a finalized face.

Any advice for other designers and developers creating app experiences for Moto 360?

I think the best piece of advice is to get a Moto 360 and really see how and when you use the watch. It will help clarify both face design and app opportunities. One of my favorite apps, for example, is a tip calculator. It’s perfect in the moment application because the result is immediate and inputs are minimal. I’m sure many other situations exist where having a ready display on your wrist can remove the need for getting out and using your phone to complete a task.

Now that you've used the watch for a while is there anything you would have designed differently? Any plans for future designs?

I’m pretty happy with how the designed turned out. I do have a better understanding of what’s possible, so future designs would be slightly different with those parameters in mind. I’ve already started working on a few additional faces actually. Free time is a bit short at the moment so I’m hoping to finish them up in December after the school term ends. In the meantime I’ll keep downloading every face I can get my hands on. It’s been a lot of fun to see what others come up with. I’d like to thank everyone again who voted for my design. It was fun to create and submit to the contest and overwhelming to see the support it received. Thank you!

Quick and Easy Halloween Costume Ideas Using Only Your Smartphone

The Halloween party is tonight, and you've been too busy to come up with a clever costume idea.

Fear not! That’s plenty to work with. A little resourcefulness and your phone can go a long way to making a crazy awesome costume.

Where Is Thy Sting?
With your phone out of sight, turn its volume way up, and play this. Then spend the entire evening swatting at an imaginary bee. Amp it up with a little red makeup to add a few bee stings to your arms, neck, and face. Bee careful not to get stung.

Tweet, Tweet
Place your smartphone in the inside pocket of a coat and play this with the volume turned up. Pad the pocket with a small towel to give it an ever-so-soft chick-like bulk. Carry on normal conversation with friends, pausing only to pull bread crumbs from another pocket that you’ll use to “feed these cute little things.” You said you wanted something creepy, didn’t you?

Everybody Loves a Photo Booth
Affix your smartphone to your chest with the screen facing out. Open your camera app and switch to the rear camera. Let people queue up and take selfies. For partygoers who didn’t get in the spirit and dress up, carry a small bag with you that includes accessories like make-up, a feather boa, fun hats, sunglasses, props. Moto Voice users will have the added benefit of doing all of this hands free (just say “take a selfie!”).

A Superhero We Can’t Name (But Know You’ll Figure Out)
Let’s say that copyright law prohibited us from naming a certain superhero. And let’s say that a visit to a certain element 26 on the periodic table would get you started on an idea. Let’s say you installed a free wallpaper on your device, tucked it under a tight black t-shirt, penciled on a thin black beard and moustache, and voila—you know what we’re talking about, man.

Tell us, what simple costume ideas can you think of? Share your zany costume ideas with us. Enter to win a Moto X when you share your costume on Twitter with the hashtag #MotoHalloween and #MyMotoX!

The New Moto X: The Story Behind a Name

Your name says something about who you are and how you see the world. Maybe you’re named for a person or a place or maybe something just downright silly. We don’t get many opportunities to name things. But when we do, we reserve the best names and nicknames—the most creative, the funniest and most personal—for the people and things we love.

The new Moto X responds to your voice and whatever name you give it, but no matter the name, the story behind it is what matters most.

Whatever your choice, choose for you.

Coming Together to Combat Bullying: Q&A with Senator Mark Kirk

We believe mobile technology can change the world. That’s why our Motorola Mobility Foundation created the Apps4Good program, where employee volunteers partner with nonprofit and civic organizations to create mobile apps that improve lives and communities.

Apps4Good projects have spanned a wide range. We developed, for instance, an app for the Chicago Bar Foundation that increases access to justice by providing information about free or low-cost legal resources. The Foundation also teamed up with the Chicago Shakespeare Theater on an interesting cultural experiment. They created an app that led audience members through various places in Chicago as part of an interactive and mobile performance experience.

The most recent project is a partnership with U.S. Senator Mark Kirk of Illinois and his Student Leadership Advisory Board to raise awareness of cyberbullying. Too many children suffer from cyberbullying without the tools and resources to respond to it. Motorola employees, student leaders, and anti-bullying experts from the Collaborative for Academic, Social, and Emotional Learning (CASEL) worked together to develop a mobile game called Back Off, Bullies. The app uses a series of questions and animations to help kids understand the dangers and impact of cyberbullying.

We sat down with Senator Kirk to hear first-hand about the initiative and his student advisory board’s efforts against cyberbullying.

Q: What is the Student Leadership Advisory Board?
Each year, I ask the junior class presidents from a region of Illinois to become active members of the Student Leadership Advisory Board (SLAB) to help me better understand the unique issues that students face in Illinois. This particular SLAB is made up of nearly 30 junior class presidents from high schools in Lake, McHenry, and Northern Cook counties. I hope that by participating in SLAB, these young students develop a passion for civic engagement and recognize their potential to effect change as future leaders and contributors to society.

Q: Why did you and the students decide to dedicate your time to the issue of cyberbullying?
I ask each advisory board to choose a topic they’re passionate about and want to spend the year working on. The students voted to address cyberbullying because it is a pervasive issue within their schools and for their peers. It’s an issue I’m also working hard in Congress to combat because every child deserves a safe environment, free of harassment, in which they can learn.

Q: Why did you want to develop a mobile app to tackle this issue?
We wanted to make the biggest impact, so it was important for us to address this issue in the environment where kids are most likely to engage. Since students are increasingly relying on mobile devices for school and play, it made the most sense to develop a fun and captivating app to get them interested in the topic.

Q: What do you hope to accomplish with this initiative?
Nearly half of the kids in Illinois have been bullied online. That’s unacceptable. By educating elementary school kids about cyberbullying before they experience or perpetuate it, we hope to prevent bullying before it starts.

Style Speaks: An Interior Designer on Why Black is the New Black

Welcome to the Style Speaks Series—a moment in which we talk with experts and thinkers about what style and color really mean and what it conveys in our lives. Color is integral to how we feel, how we choose to communicate, how we choose express ourselves—and even how we choose to customize our phones! This is what these people think about color. What about you? What do you choose?

When it comes to color, Sabreen Madden is obsessed. As an interior designer and teaching assistant at Harrington College of Design, color is integral to how she creates spaces. During her day-to-day she is always thinking about color theory, color relationships, and design elements. “Everywhere I go, everything I do, every package I look at—even a box of cookies—I’m thinking about the color and design,” she said.

Black is one of Sabreen’s favorite colors. She took us around the house in Chicago she beautifully designed and shared how she thinks about what black conveys.

Sabreen-02.JPG

While she was decorating her home on Chicago’s North Side she took inspiration from raw, concrete, industrial modern spaces she saw during a trip to New York in 2009. “I realized it’s not scary. You can do one wall that’s black and pair it with white and really have an open and airy space that has these dark, dramatic moments,” she said. “I decided to just go for it.”

Sabreen-07.JPG

Sabreen said that the color black is often associated with a “gothic” stigma, but that was not her intention when she chose the paint for her industrial modern loft on Chicago’s North Side. She used black to create depth in her home.

“In my space I’m using black for design purposes,” Madden said.

Sabreen Madden’s husband, Terrence, built the fireplace in their industrial modern loft on Chicago’s North Side. She said the black paint around it is used intentionally as camouflage, so when a fire is burning it’s “kind of it’s own element,” she said, adding that the black paint also camouflages the television. Their dog Winnie can often be found sleeping on the fireplace’s steel hearth.

Sabreen-11.JPG

“I think black is a very sophisticated color or non-color,” Sabreen says. “I hope that when someone sees the black in my house they see it as an intentional element to enhance what’s within the space.”

Sabreen said color choice in a home is very subjective and contingent on what feeling the homeowner is attempting to convey. In her North Side home, where she used black and white as her base colors, Sabreen said she was attempting to be bold, dramatic and sophisticated, while also keeping her space personal.

“Usually when we go through the design process, we have a series of interview-type exercises to determine what a client wants in a space,” she said. “First and foremost, you want to have a functional space, and then you can talk about what kind of feeling you want. In that way, I try to get examples. If you want a light and airy feeling, what are some examples of a space that gave you a light and airy feeling? What about that space made you feel light and airy? Then we can build off of that.”

Sabreen said that if a client wanted to include black in their space, she would advise them to use it as an accent color to create some contrast. If too much black is used, she added, it can get too heavy, too dark, and can make a space look small.

“It would definitely show they are willing to take a risk,” Madden added. “Black isn’t something you see in residential design very often, but when you don’t hold back it can be very powerful and fun.”

“When you have all really light neutrals in a space, there’s nothing really to ground your eye, there’s no focus wall. Black is an absorption of all colors, so it’s not even really a color. In the bedroom I use it as a back wall to ground the bed. In another room I use it to frame the bookshelf, I also use it to emphasize the alcove.”

“You can get inspiration from anywhere, and that’s what I do now,” she says. ‘I even look at my dog, Winnie, and think about her color combinations compared to other dogs, I can’t help it.”

The Download: It’s Time for a Moto 360 Android Wear Update

Moto 360 was designed to be timeless—and that goes for our software, too! Today we are beginning to roll out a new Android Wear update coming to your watch soon. In this update you will find:
  • Smart Battery Saving - When your battery hits 15%, your Moto 360 will turn off ambient mode, so you don’t have to remember to.
  • Timely Time Checks - Moto 360 will synchronize the time with your phone more often to make sure it is up to the minute.
  • User Interface Tweaks - We observed with consumers that there are many times where you want to use your Moto 360 as truly a classic watch—a beautiful way to see the time. A new gesture now lets you see the full watch face without permanently dismissing a notification. Just touch the top of a notification and swipe down. You’ll see the notification again when you have another high priority notification.
  • Mood Lighting - Moto 360 will adjust to the lighting of the room while charging, so that it isn’t too bright or too dark.
  • Readying the wires for Bluetooth - There are a couple of under-the-hood enhancements that will pave the way for connecting Bluetooth headsets to the watch.
  • Bug Squashing - As usual, bugs are squashed to enhance the overall user experience.
We will roll out the new software in phases. Look for the update notification on your watch! You will be prompted to install. To install the update, make sure that you’re connected to your phone with an internet connection and that your watch has at least 80% battery.

Let us know what you think. And keep checking our official Moto 360 Google+ community for more news and fun.
